Saturday 10/30,
12pm and 1:30pm: FREE rock-climbing workshop...

Whether you've never climbed before or are an experienced climber, come learn and practice vertical rock climbing. An instructor from REI will provide climbing instruction and all equipment. All are welcome (must be at least 5 years old, and under 18 must have adult consent.) Two sessions will be run: 12pm and 1:30pm. Pre-registration required! Email Boston Natural Areas Network to register, or call 617-542-7696.

...and Twinkie Roast!
In addition to a great day of climbing, there will also be an REI-sponsored Twinkie Roast! REI holds Twinkie Roasts each fall as a ritual to encourage Mother Nature to provide a snowy winter for snowsports lovers everywhere. The snow may fall or not, but you can enjoy a decadent, delicious treat either way. Whether you climb or not, stop by for a free roasted Twinkie!

Nira's 4o-foot rock face has two hardware-equipped routes, and offers some great climbing right in Jamaica Plain.
Nira Rock: Boston's Hidden Gem
Nira Rock is a secluded haven, right in the heart of the city. Though it covers less than two acres, Nira Rock offers:
• Two challenging rock-climbing trails with climbing hardware.
• An orchard where you are welcome to sample the apples, pears, plums, cherries, raspberries and blueberries.
• A hilltop meadow with scenic views of Parker Hill and the Jamaicaway.
• Lots of shady spots to stroll, picnic, study nature, or to simply sit and enjoy the day. Dogs are welcome – and kids love it!
Of course, Nira Rock is best known for its striking 40-foot natural wall of "Roxbury Puddingstone," a prized building material which was quarried here for use in many of Boston's most celebrated structures and parks. (In fact, outcroppings like Nira are what “Rox”-bury was named for.) But in the last few years, the land surrounding the rockface has been replanted with a profusion of native shrubs and trees, and paths have been improved, making Nira an abundant, beautiful natural sanctuary for wildlife and people alike.
Pitch in! Friends of Nira Rock is an all-volunteer organization. We're always open to ideas and, of course, a ready pair of hands. Feel free to contact us if you have either!

We're proud to announce that Nira Rock has been officially designated an "EcoTipping Point" – a place that changes a cycle of decline into one of restoration, setting the entire environmental system on a new course. Our honor roll: Thank you to the groups who are helping make Nira a special place this summer:
MAY 1st
City Year brought 30 hard-working heroes who raked, chopped, pulled and swept Nira into shape for the summer.

New in our diary: "While walking my dog this morning at Nira Rock I was struck by a cacaphony of noise coming from a stand of trees on the north end of the upper meadow. Closer investigation revealed several blue jays circling and protesting a red tailed hawk, who was jumping ever closer to a branch on some sort of coniferous tree..." Read more.
