    Friday, July 17th, 8pm:
Flicks on the Rocks presents "Ratatouille."
The next in our series of free outdoor movies. Bring a blanket (or chair) to sit on and an appetite for fun and homemade popcorn. Raindate Sunday 7/19.
  Sat, July 18th, 9-11am:
Bagels and Rocks.
Our semi-bi-weekly series of bagel and gardening get-togethers. We'll have bagels, a toaster, and a sweet summer morning in the orchard. Drop by for any or all of it to munch, garden, or hang out.

Nira's 4o-foot rock face has two hardware-equipped routes, and offers some great climbing right in Jamaica Plain.
Nira Rock:
Boston's
hidden gem
Nira Rock is a secluded haven, right in the heart of the city. Though it covers less than two acres, Nira Rock offers:
• Two challenging rock-climbing trails with climbing hardware.
• An orchard where you are welcome to sample the apples, pears, plums, cherries, raspberries and blueberries.
• A hilltop meadow with scenic views of Parker Hill and the Jamaicaway.
• Lots of shady spots to stroll, picnic, study nature, or to simply sit and enjoy the day. Dogs are welcome – and kids love it!
Of course, Nira Rock is best known for its striking 40-foot natural wall of "Roxbury Puddingstone," a prized building material which was quarried here for use in many of Boston's most celebrated structures and parks. (In fact, outcroppings like Nira are what “Rox”-bury was named for.) But in the last few years, the land surrounding the rockface has been replanted with a profusion of native shrubs and trees, and paths have been improved, making Nira an abundant, beautiful natural sanctuary for wildlife and people alike.
Pitch in! Friends of Nira Rock is an all-volunteer organization. We're always open to ideas and, of course, a ready pair of hands. Feel free to contact us if you have either!

Last summer, the orchard yielded blackberries, blueberries, apples, plums, and a bumper crop of catbirds...
Our honor roll: Thank you to the groups who are helping make Nira a special place this summer:

MAY 8th
Generations, Inc. rolled boulders, removed invasive plants, weeded and mulched. Thank you!
MAY 30th
City Year brought a busload of hard workers to Nira as part of its city-wide Serve-a-thon. Thanks for the blueberry patch, City Year!

New in our diary: "While walking my dog this morning at Nira Rock I was struck by a cacaphony of noise coming from a stand of trees on the north end of the upper meadow. Closer investigation revealed several blue jays circling and protesting a red tailed hawk, who was jumping ever closer to a branch on some sort of coniferous tree..." Read more.
